Oral Language – Not Seen and Not Heard
October 10 @ 9:50 am - 10:40 am
What is going on with our students? What can we do to help?
This presentation turns the idea of what we want our 21st Century learners to become on its head and examines who the 21st Century learner actually is.
We know how important it is to know our learners in order to meet their needs. In a time of rapid change in children’s portable electronic media use, Nicole’s research proves that there has been a drop in oral language ability for our learners in New Zealand. Nicole presents the fascinating results of her dissertation “Not Seen and Not Heard: A Study of the Impact of Rapid Rise in Portable Media Use on Oral Language Proficiency in New Zealand Children”. She discusses what it means for us in terms of classroom interactions and leads a practical discussion on what we can do to support our learners at this pivotal time.
